Witnesses say the man was not armed, he was pulling out a wallet from a hole on the side of his pocket. CWLA members talked to witnesses and downtown residents today about it.

message:I live in skid row. I have experienced and witnessed many instances of police brutality of r a period of five years. I believe there situations can mostely be avoided by investigating and reevaluating the ways in which police are hired and trained. I understand the police here do not possess a degree in criminal law. They can be hired with as little as a GEd. I asked an officer once how he can enforce the paw when he doesn't know what the law is? He stated "Well, I can go to my book of statutes and law in my car.,. I then stated "So when you're in the middle of a crime situation...you can just stop whatever you're doing and go run to your car to read about what law has been broken?". I ask you citizens; how can a civil servant enforce the law if he doesn't know what the law is? Also, the way police recruits are trained obviously does not work. There are too many instances of police brutality to say it does. Where is their sensitivity to basic human rights? Police recruits are psychologically tested upon acceptance to the academy...but what about after they're finished "training"? Does their training involve execution of innocent people? What exactly are these recruits taught I wonder? It would behoove us as citizens concerned with our own safety to find out the answers to these questions if we are to begin to exercise our authority over these civil servants gone amuke.
